Our Story's Beginning
the beginning
After separately watching the documentary TINY on Netflix, Tom and I realized that building a tiny home was a real dream for each of us. We didn't know if we were being idealistic or just jumping on a bandwagon, but about a year rolled by and we were still serious about the idea. Many late-night conversations about what tiny living could be like, whether or not we could afford it, and thinking hard about potential surprises that might come up along the way culminated in us deciding to move forward! On our wedding registry, we asked for money to attend Tumbleweed's workshop in Portland directly after our British Columbia honeymoon. We learned so much during that weekend and came out of it more excited than ever to build our own home. We purchased plans for Tumbleweed's Cypress model before heading back to Maryland.
making the leap
So it was official! We made plans in summer 2015 to purchase a utility trailer through Tumbleweed as soon as spring 2016 came. This was scary, but so worth it - they do the necessary welding steps so that you can build your road-ready home onto a very strong foundation. We were very thankful to find that one of the few US trailer companies Tumbleweed works through was only 90 minutes from our home! After we put down $4,500 for the trailer in the very beginning, most of our family and friends realized we weren't kidding around about the project.
and beyond
We've planned to build from spring 2016 until the end of fall 2016 and then move into our new home! Right now it's July of 2016 and we're about 1/3 of the way done. Progress is hard to predict because we've never done this before. (All we know is that after the very stressful subfloor drilling-into-steel process, everything else seems like a breeze!) Thank you for your support in our journey. We're excited to see where this goes!
